The people of are getting the chance to do just that with Carenza Lewis of Channel 4’s‘Time Team’ fame and her team of archaeologist from Access Cambridge Archaeology.
Carenza Lewis will be running an archaeological project at Bures in Essex. Residents of Bures will have the chance to uncover the history hidden in their own gardens by digging test pits, supervised by Carenza's Team at Access Cambridge Archaeology an outreachunit of Cambridge University.
The test pits can be dug by the home owners or by people volunteering on the excavations, or a combination of the two. The pits are just one metre square, take only two days to dig and cause very little mess or disruption. You can find further information about this at the Access Cambridge Archaeology website and a there is a short film about excavations carried out under Carenza's supervision for Michael Wood's Story of England TV series.
The excavation will run from the 25th to the 29th of June. The excavation is open to visitors and we would love to hear from you if you would like to bring a group. If you are interested in having a test pit on your property orwould like to visit and would like to know more please get in touch. The test pitting is free, but locations must be assessed for suitability. Please contact Access Cambridge Archaeology for further information.
