Throughout the Arts Programme five local schools are scheduled to have their own artist in residence. The theme is the Stour Valley, an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a landscape that has inspired artists down the years.
We have been running a mosaic project with Ridgewell Primary where we explored the village and designed a map with the children and staff at the school. The mosaic shows a styalised map of the village, which will be installed in the new school foyer in September.
Artist Alex Hallowes, worked with all the children in school, including the very little ones, and the result is a colourful and symbolic representation of the village, with geographic and historic references.
'Kids from Ridgewell work on the mosaic'
Headteacher Denise Madden (pictued left viewing the final mosaic design with some of the staff and kids from Ridgewell) said, 'The finished picture looks great, I can hardly wait to see it completed!
This is the first of the Managing a Masterpiece school projects. We will also be working with Clare Primary on a ceramic project. The project will explore the long and varied history of the village, which goes back as far as the iron age. The tiles created by the children will be mounted in the library.
We are also planning other similar projects with other schools in the valley. There is still a project 'up for grabs' for a primary school in the Stour Valley. Get in touch if you would like your school to be involved...
